Temple Beth Sholom’s Bikkur Cholim Society is almost completely formed. The unique program of TBS Bikkur Cholim Society will be providing hospital and home visits, support services and prayers of health and healing for our community.
The Bikkur Cholim Society is in need of volunteers to visit our congregants when the need arises. Privacy will be respected and maintained for this person/and or family.
Volunteers will be trained. We will have meeting(s) and a handbook to address what may be difficult situations for some people. Training will also assure that we all have the same approach and appropriate skills.
A pamphlet with prayers has been compiled and printed and is available now to be left with those whom you visit. Report sheets have been composed and will be printed for the volunteers’ use. The Rabbi and our office staff will be working with us.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER by contacting Richard Rafle, Chairman of the Society via E-Mail at: CemeteryChair@tbsofs.org or phone to TBS office(631) 724-0424.
Take just ONE hour from your busy week to volunteer. I look forward to working with you in this great mitzvah.
HOW DO I USE THE BIKKUR CHOLlM SOCIETY?
As you read in another article about the Bikkur Cholim Society being formed, the Society will be providing hospital and home visits, support services and prayers of health and healing for our Jewish community. The Society is more or less in place and has already made several visits.
The Bikkur Cholim Society needs more volunteers to expand the program.
It is nice to have someone from your congregation visit you, in confidence, either by phone or in person, while you are ill. It would be nice for someone from our congregation at Temple Beth Sholom, to visit a loved one when you can’t be there. It would be nice to hear from someone when you or your loved one is convalescing. It would be nice to have a little help with daily chores, perhaps, some light shopping when you can’t get out.
SO WHAT DO I, OR A FAMILY MEMBER, DO?
There are two ways to arrange for visits. 1) Call the Rabbi, tell him you are ill and would like a visitor. Rabbi Nesenoff will notify Richard Rafle, who will arrange for a volunteer. 2) Contact Richard Rafle directly by phone (631-499-3478) or fax (631-499-4937) and provide him with the name of the person who is ill or injured, their phone number, location of that person (i.e. - hospital or nursing home name), your phone number, your name and relationship to the person who is ill or injured. Just two people, the rabbi and the chairman of the society, will have this information, which will remain confidential, if that is your wish. Visits will remain confidential always, even if you chose to tell friends, family or congregation members.

Our sincere thanks to Richard Rafle and the Building and Grounds Committee and Staff for their hard work leading up to and during renovation
November 1, 2005
Dear Friends:
By now you have all had the pleasure of experiencing our rejuvenated Sanctuary at Temple Beth Sholom! Our new Sanctuary has been totally refurbished and it looks spectacular! The new sound system enabled all High Holiday attendees to experience the services hearing them clearly no matter where they were seated. The new lighting has made those of us who thought that our eyes were going to see all reading materials much better! The new pews have made sitting through services a comfortable experience.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to come to TBS for services in your new Sanctuary, and see your family’s name inscribed? For as little as $360 you all have the opportunity to “Inscribe Yourself” in our NEW TBS Sanctuary! Has your child become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah? Do you have an upcoming B’nai Mitzvah, Wedding, or other simcha? Would you like to memorialize a loved one who has passed? What better way to honor your family, than to inscribe them in the Sanctuary for all to see. Pick as many as you would like!
But please don’t wait! We have received many pledges, and the item you want may not be there much longer for the choosing! Please contact us to discuss any item in the Sanctuary that you would like to have inscribed for you or your loved ones. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at (631) 724-0424 or email WaysAndMeansVP@tbsofs.org.
A special thank you to Richard Rafle and the entire Sanctuary Renovation Committee for seeing this dream come to fruition. They have devoted a tremendous amount of time and energy, attending countless meetings, choosing our beautiful new fixtures, carpeting, upholstery and furniture, and making sure that this process went smoothly. From their expert coordination, the Sanctuary was completed AHEAD of schedule, and we all know how rare that is in the world of construction/redecorating.
Spring 2002: As the Temple was beginning to restructure, the Board of Directors requested that Richard Rafle, the then 2nd V.P. Buildings and Grounds, form a committee to improve the appearance of our Sanctuary. The committee was formed with Richard as chairman, and included Tammie Rafle, Glenda Smith, Andrea Deutsch, Arnie Steuer, Warren Miller, Robert Kaiserman, Anne Keim, Rabbi Alan Londy, Gary Klein, Herb Feinstein, Terry Scheman and Victor Jacobs. 2002 – 2003: The Committee met every 2 – 3 weeks, sending out information and designs for our newly revised Sanctuary. Visits were made to more than 40 congregations on Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland. Bids were sought from Sauder Manufacturing Company and Lavi Furniture Company of Israel. Interior decorators and artists were interviewed with an eye to staying within our budget. All in all, by June 2003 a plan was in place and presented to the Temple Board of Directors. But, alas, there was not enough money in Temple cash reserves to finance the project, as planned. It was tabled.
Fall 2003: The Committee was asked to re-form. By December 2003, furniture from the Sauder Furniture Company of Archibold, Ohio was selected, a contract was drawn up and a binder was donated by Richard Rafle, allowing us to lock in furniture costs at 2003 prices. William Ambulavage, our salesman, worked very hard to help us. The Committee continued to refine the plan and presented it to the Board in May 2004. However, there were still insufficient funds to carry out this new plan. The Board agreed to consider a line of credit from the bank during the Summer of 2004.
Fall 2004: The Committee started over most diligently to seek contractors for each phase, refining colors, fabrics, carpeting and lighting fixtures. The Committee designed the lighting fixtures and had them constructed by Irwin Goldberg of Coronet Lighting in Brentwood. The pew design was modified. The bimah chairs, lectern and Torah reading table were developed by the Committee and custom-made by the Sauder Company. Seating fabric was chosen from a selection of 200, to be coordinated with the carpet supplied by Chuck Ackerman of Custom Design, Inc., a former member. Custom Design also helped find a wallpaper fabric for the rear folding wall. Sider Lumber of St. James, owned by Temple members, donated the paint, which involved a last-minute color change. Countless hours and miles were spent on this project. Gerson Caterers watched our progress closely. November 2004: We knew that our loan was in process, so we waited for the legal procedures to be completed. We were a go, but when? The last Bar Mitzvah was scheduled for June 24th and the next was to take place Aug. 5th, a five week window – wow – could we do it? Bets were on that we could not! Our plan was to set up the cocktail room for services, which would suffice until the refurbishing was complete.
2005: Contractors were selected from among 50 bidders. The winners were each required to sign a contract with a penalty clause in case of late completion. Final details were put together by May 2005. On June 25th, the Sanctuary was closed, cleaned out and work begun. In July, the seating, rails and carpeting were removed. Because we had no idea of what might be found as renovation proceeded, Richard became the General Contractor and spent 3 weeks at the Sanctuary from 7-8 AM to 5-6 PM daily, Monday through Friday, as well as some Sundays. Greg Powers, who was very helpful, was also on-site. There were times when the electricians, ground crews, painters and carpenters were present simultaneously. The carpenter, David Kaplan of Dak Mica and Wood Products Company, Ronkonkoma, altered the choir loft, built a video projection booth, refurbished the mahogany over the Ark and filled in the cracks between the beams and the walls. He will also build two Torah stands and a Tallis rack – all designed by the Committee- and a new display case for the Westminster Holocaust Torah. This last will be located in the lobby between the Sanctuary and ballroom doors for all to see and be aware ofits significance. Well, we began June 25th and finished July 29th – unbelievable!! Jose, Greg and Richard took a week to clean up thoroughly and put the books in place for Chelsea Newman’s Bat Mitzvah. Come to Friday evening or Shabbat Services – or just peek in; this is your new Sanctuary at Temple Beth Sholom of Smithtown. Richard Rafle

Many thanks to all of you who are continuing to donate nonperishable food and grocery store gift cards to our temple’s food pantry. The food goes directly to people in need.
We are seeing a great idea becoming popular... food baskets in lieu of flowers on the bima for Bar/Bat mitzvah services. They look fantastic and help keep our food pantry well stocked - a beautiful mitzvah.
In December we had our annual coat, hat, scarf and mitten collection. A success again!! We donated the clothing to NY Cares, an organization that distributes the coats to the homeless in the city all season long.
We appreciate your continued generosity.
If you have any ideas or concerns feel free to contact us.

Youth
Youth Group Activities
Parents will be pleased to know that we are now in the process of signing up your children, collecting dues and scheduling activities for all divisions of the TBS youth group.
The group will be divided into three divisions; grades 1-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Grades 1 through 5 will meet every other month with programs scheduled for four times or more per year, depending upon volunteer availability. For our grades 6 through 8 we will schedule monthly meetings to be combined with programs such as pizza and game nights. The children in grades 6 thru 8 will also be signed up with Kadima, a division of USY (United Synagogue Youth). Our full USY members, grades 9 thru 12, will enjoy a program of events that will include meeting and participating in events with other chapters as well as being able to participate in camp and other travel programs.
Please pay attention to the flyers that will be coming home so you can mark your calendar and be aware of all the exciting events we are planning. If you would like to be a part of our program and become an active volunteer with the youth group please contact me by calling the temple or sending me an email at youth@tbsofs.org.

Paul T. Given County Park (across from the Smithtown Bull) - 12:00
Our Canoe
trip down the Nissequogue River is this Sunday October 18th at 12:00. October
mornings have been cool but our 12:00 Start time will be the warmest part of
the day and the weather forecast is lovely. This years Canoe Commander will be Heath Berger (hhberger@optonline.net or

Agruso. Like Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Lewis and Clark) assisted
by Sacajawea, they will lead our regatta on a safe and inspirational journey
down the Nissequogue River.
Your 2 1/2
hour canoe or kayak trip ends at "The Bluff" in Kings Park. There
will be a shuttle bus to take us back to our cars at the end of our voyage.
Timing is critical when paddling down the Nissequogue River since it is an
estuary. A falling tide assists you when paddling downstream toward "The
Bluff" where the Nissequogue River empties into the scenic Long Island
Sound.

Dear Fellow
Congregants,
Wow... the
TBS Men's Club October Family, Friends & Fun Festival has been a huge
success. Our 1st Annual Sukkah Hop was so very special. There is nothing like
getting together with our friends while celebrating the natural, historical
& spiritual holiday of Sukkot. Thank you sincerely to all our host families
and all the hoppers for participating and making all our hard work worthwhile.
Thank-you to Rabbi Nesenoff, Hebrew school principal, Cantor Carla, and Cantor
Judy Merrickfor guiding us with
history, song and friendship throughout this joyous occasion.
Ok... Ok...
Was that Fishing Trip the BEST or what?? C'mon 54 of our Friends & Families
renting out the whole Yankee3 Fishing Boat. We had the best weather... blue
skies... and FISH!! There is nothing in this world like the expression on a
kids face while they're reeling in a fish. Actually the parents had pretty big
smiles on their faces also.
I can't
thank our Congregational Families enough for participating in our events. I
realize it's tough with our busy schedules to do all our activities. That is
exactly why we're having something happening every weekend this month. So if
you missed the first few events you'll have two more chances to get involved!
Our NEXT
FUN on a SUNday October 18th EVENT... CANOEING!!!
That's right... Like the ancient Jews of Egypt along the Nile River, Jews of
Long Island have enjoyed the serene beauty of the North Shore's Nissequouue
River. This will mark our 2nd annual Jews in Canoes River Dance. With a little
luck of good weather we will see the early Autumn leaves from a view like no
other. We will Meet at Paul T. Given County Park across from "The
Bull" on route 25/25A in Smithtown. at 12:00 and enjoy a 2 1/2 hour
journey traveled by ancient Smithtownians for hundreds of years.
